How often does someone express their opinion and you change your mind because you respect them? Do you sit on the fence about making a decision until someone sways you in their direction? Do you make your decisions based on someone else’s opinion of “reality?”
Throughout the last few years I’ve had to deal with more than my share of gurus and experts who are passionate about what they are teaching or doing. I’m happy for them. However just because they have done something before… or maybe have a vast amount of knowledge about something doesn’t mean that their opinion has to be your reality. And just because they are considered an expert doesn’t mean they are an expert about your life.
I believe there are wonderful teachers out there and I share dozens of them in Simple Steps Real Change Magazine. The ones I know and trust will all say though that you are the best person to decide what is right for you. They will provide you with some new ideas or perhaps just small perspective shifts that might help you see your life differently. The power though lies within you.
There are others though that will tell you that their way is the only way, that if you don’t do what they tell you to you will fail, regret it or suffer. Those are the folks you want to run far away from. Their view of the world may have a different vantage point but that is all it is… a different view. If they walked in your shoes they’d see it very differently. But they don’t.
Ben Franklin said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” And if you believe that life is eternal then death isn’t and taxes depend on where you live. And with those two wiped out then nothing is certain unless you believe it is.
As you encounter those in your day or your life who try to tell what to do or who try and get you to see “reality…” always remember that reality is what you decide it is. And if there is something about yours that you are not happy with only you can change it.
