Excerpt – Simple Steps for Real Life by Cheryl L. Maloney. Available on Amazon.com
When you were growing up, were you taught to be practical? Go to school, get a job, stay loyal to the company, get married, have children … do what a good husband/wife is supposed to do.
We are all on this journey of life, and no two paths are identical. When someone tells you to “be practical,” they are making an attempt to define your life by their standards. The same is true for anyone who tells you to “get real.” It’s up to you to define your own reality according to what is important to you.
Everyone has responsibilities. I’m not suggesting you neglect legitimate responsibilities to find what makes you happy. Instead, adapt your responsibilities to include creating the life of your dreams. For example: if you’re not in a satisfying job but you need to pay the bills, start looking for a new job while you’re still employed. If you’re in an unhappy relationship and have children to consider, decide what environment is best for their development and create it. Remember: every decision is one you freely make.
Try one of these Simple Steps when you are ready to choose your own reality:
• Make a list of factors or experiences you know would contribute to your happiness.
• Prioritize your list … then start working on your top item.
• Communicate to those around you what you’re doing and why it’s important to you. Ask for their support. Be grateful if you receive it … be determined to persevere if you don’t.
Others may not like what you’re doing, but you can’t make them happy any more than they can make you happy. Live the life you choose! Create your own reality! It will feel so right, you’ll wonder why you waited so long!
