I read a fabulous “manifesto” from my friend, Dave,  this morning.  His words were inspiring, the writing amazingly poetic without being poetic and I literally sat in awe of his wisdom.   As I sat there taking in his message I knew that I was reading the words of a generational leader.  I am not the prolific writer that Dave is and it would be easy to feel intimidated by his writing.  It was at that moment though that I recognized the beauty of being incomparable.

It’s been a little over a year since I started writing and created Simple Steps… Real Change.  In this time I’ve had the privilege of meeting quite a few very talented writers, inspirational & motivational speakers.  Some have made a name for themselves… others are on their way to changing the world.  I possess neither their vision nor their promotional expertise.  Still, Simple Steps… Real Change has gathered quite a nice group of friends on our Facebook page… so what I’m doing resonates with many. It is my niche.

We all have niches in life that make us the people that we are. Rather than comparing ourselves to others we need to celebrate that all of our unique talents come together to make the world a better place. If you are feeling overshadowed by another or even in a group try one of these Simple Steps to appreciate your calling:

  • Make a list of everything that you have done well in the last week or month.  Examples may include that you organized work project that went off without a hitch, you spent hours reading at the local retirement home, you helped your child work through a difficult experience at school.  Nothing is too big or too small to put on this list. Don’t edit the list or second guess what you write down… let it flow!
  • Next read through the list for common themes.  For example perhaps those organizational skills at work carried over to home or your church.  Did you realize that others were coming to you for help turning chaos into clarity?  Or perhaps you find yourself helping others get through tough situations is a trend.  Your niche may be that you are the “go to” person when others need a guiding hand.
  • Once you’ve identified your niche starting looking for opportunities to use your talents. Consider taking new job, a project at church, taking your family from day to day living to making future plans!

Accentuate the positive in your life and realize that the incomparable you is happy!  And that feel good!
