A friend of mine was having another particularly stressful week at work. In the heat of the moment he told me that he was there for one reason, the money. Sounds familiar? I spent many years working at a job that I hated because the money was good.
Fast forward to 2010 and my share of financial stress and I’ve landed at a place where I don’t care about the money anymore. I’ve had it and I wasn’t happy. I’ve lost it and I wasn’t happy. In the end what I’ve realized is that I’d rather enjoy my life than work at a job in order to make money. It might be frustrating to my boss…but I have nothing to lose.
It really isn’t money that is ever the issue. It’s our relationship with it. If you believe that you have to make a certain amount of money to be happy or feel secure then anytime you aren’t at that level you are going to be miserable. In today’s economy most of us are living a little more conservatively. What we are finding is that having the new car, the designer clothes, the vacations, or whatever use to be a “must” doesn’t matter anymore.
Funny thing is…this “economy” that we want to blame…is a blessing in disguise. Because we can’t afford to spend money on “things” we find ourselves spending more quality time with our families enjoying simple pleasures. In the end it is not the dollars that we spend it is the time that we spend together that defines our lives.
Today’s Simple Steps:
- Hug someone…your spouse, your kids, your friends & pets.
- Revel in the joy that they are hugging you back.
When you lay your head down on your pillow tonight…give thanks for the blessings in your life that have nothing to do with the dollars in your wallet
