Last week at work was stressful. No matter what I think that I am doing to make our operations a better place…it seems like I run into roadblocks. I was hoping when I left the big corporation that there wouldn’t be anymore arrows thrown at the bulls-eye on the back of my head. They’re still coming…the difference is with a small company the ramifications ripple out impacting more people.
I think perhaps this is my test. Am I going to cave or stand my ground. The sad thing is that I don’t want to be at either extreme. That doesn’t seem to be an option. My natural instincts are to do “what’s right.” That was my last company’s slogan and it is probably the only one that they had that meant something. So I live by those words. I don’t have a need to be right…but I do have a need to do the right thing by those who depend on me.
What about you? Are you standing up for yourself and what matters to you? What is the most important “cause” in your life? What do you need to do to help it succeed? If you are faced with a decision to forge ahead or retreat try these Simple Steps to make up your mind:
- Ask yourself who benefits from your “cause.” Is it just you? Your family, friends? Are you helping your community, church or country? If your vision goes beyond yourself…keep moving forward. If it is just you…
- Ask yourself if what you are advocating will matter in 7 minutes, 7 days or 7 months. If it doesn’t let it go. If it does… advance.
There is a song that goes, “You have to stand for something or you will fall for anything.” Make sure what you stand for has meaning. There is no satisfaction in the realm of superficial.
